ARHE Conference
Columbus, OH / June 2023
On June 23rd, the ROC Team headed to Columbus, Ohio, to attend and present at the Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) conference at the Ohio State University. It proved to be a profound and inspiring experience. Our team presented on Creating Collegiate Recovery in a Canadian Context where members of our team and students who have been a part of the UCalgary Recovery community shared their stories of recovery and why the UCalgary Recovery Community is so important.
Dr. Victoria Burns also presented her Paper exploring the Politics of Disclosure, sharing the importance of providing a safe space for Faculty and Staff to be able to disclose without fear of repercussion, and discrimination so that they may be able to support students in a robust way. Both presentations were well attended. Throughout the rest of the week, we attended sessions that explored peer support, how to engage students and stakeholders, as well as fundraising and marketing strategies, and many shared stories of success about their collegiate programs. The ROC team had the opportunity to meet many of the amazing people we’ve had the privilege of connecting with over Zoom and to create new connections.
One amazing takeaway from the event was how connected and supportive the collegiate recovery community is with each other how grateful we are to be a part of that wonderful family.
The ROC Team returns to you here in Alberta, inspired, energized, and ready to continue to push for collegiate recovery programming with new ideas, new tools, and excitement that will carry us through and hopefully spread to the rest of our post-secondary institutions.
